Q&A: Meet Keia Kodama
Can boredom lead to brilliance? For California creative Keia Kodama, the answer is absolutely yes! We talked with her about the inspiration for her sneaker art (The Kodama Project) and her love for creating. Read on to find out what she had to say.
HEATHER: SHARE A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOURSELF.
KEIA: I’m a California native-born and raised. I have been in visual production, arts and wardrobe styling for 16 years. I’m a mother of a wonderful 22 year old daughter, who makes me so proud.
HEATHER: WHEN DID YOUR LOVE FOR FASHION AND SNEAKERS START? KEIA: My love for sneakers started at a young age in the 80’s. I remember RUN DMC “Walk this Way” video and begging for shell toes. I was always a tomboy and wanted to hang with the boys and one thing they have always been big on was sneakers, so like them I wanted to be cool and have the cool kicks, too. Fashion is a whole other beast. I have always loved shopping and clothes. I think the freedom it brings to express yourself fearlessly, as well as reinvent who you are at the time.
HEATHER: TELL US MORE ABOUT THE KODAMA PROJECT. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE IT?
KEIA: I started The Kodama Project due to being home because of COVID. I was doing these projects around my apartment to revamp my spaces and it caught the attention from the great sneaker community. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have always explored my creative outlets, I honestly contribute my success this year is because of everyone being home. COVID + Boredom helped me.
HEATHER: YOU INSPIRE SO MANY OF US TO CREATE AND THINK OUTSIDE-THE-BOX. WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE? KEIA: Thank you! I honestly just do what feels good to me. I have these concepts and ideas that pop in my head, I guess I need to get them out my head and see them physically or prove to myself that I can do it.
HEATHER: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE/MOTTO THAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?
KEIA: I live by “To thyself be true” I hope that self will always be someone that walks in their truths and is good to everyone around them. But you have to want to be a good person to use that, your truth can't be hatred, lol. I don’t think it works that way.
HEATHER: WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU? KEIA: Unfortunately, I can’t call it. I just do what is organic to me and what I feel good doing.
